EDUCATIONAL CHALLENGES IN MINOR SCHOOLS: History of New Kapela Primary School
NEW KAPELA PRIMARY SCHOOL
HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL UP TO DECEMBER, 2018
BY ASIMS 2018
New Kapela Primary school is situated in Senga Hill District in the Northern Province of Zambia. The school was found in 1999 with very low enrollment levels, not revealed at the time of data collection. The school has an establishment of eight teachers but only three teachers are present. The school was established after abolishment of Old Kapela due to lack of community support and disengagement. The school was moved from its initial location in Kasekela village to Mupanza Village. These areas are so close to each other that the closure of Old Kapela Primary School which was situated at Kasekela and the opening of New Kapela Primary School hard no significant Meaning. Today both schools exist but old Kapela was moved to a nearby schools to allow children in that area access education. I feel this was a good action because learners at Ombe village used to cover long distances of up to 9 km.
Old Kapela Primary School is better situated than New Kapela Primary school because is nearer to the main road, Mbala to Nakonde Road and close to the Zone Centre, which is Chileshya. Prominent teachers that have served New Kapela Primary School include Mr. Mulongwe Charles, Mr Mukubesa, Mr, Sinkala, Mr Malama Patrick, Mr Musantu and many others. These, early teachers shaped the school into a better position.
The school runs from grade 1-7 and has a grade 7 examination centre ID. Currently, the school has one temporary 1x2 classroom block with an office for the headteacher. The office, however, is multipurpose because that is the only office available. There is also an incomplete block which is awaiting funds for completion. Current enrollment is close to 300 pupils.
In August 2018, the school received a new set of three teachers and administrators. These Include Mr Sikazwe Chisha (Headteacher), Mr. Simukoko Alfred (Deputy Headteacher) and Mr Mwamba Andrew (Senior Teacher). These teachers serve in administrative positions and teach all the grades in the school. Although, the school has not received significant developed since 1999, government through DEBS office is committed to developing the school so that learners at New Kapela Primary school can have access to quality education like the rest in the district.
